PROVIDENCE — Providence College has canceled its Late Night Madness Celebration, scheduled for Saturday night, due to the death of a PC student Thursday night, the school has announced.
Athletics Director Bob Driscoll, men's basketball coach Ed Cooley and women's basketball coach Jim Crowley have made the decision that, out of respect for the family, the celebration should be canceled.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family," said Driscoll. "Our campus community is grieving and out of respect for the young man and his family, we have made the appropriate decision to cancel late night madness."
PC's acting president, the Rev. Ken Sicard, confirmed the death and identified the student as Augustus Cardello, 19, of Westport, Connecticut, a sophomore who was found dead in dorm room Thursday night. Police have ruled out foul play.
The sold-out event at Alumni Hall, which was to star 2 Chainz., replaced a more basketball-centric opening night several years ago.
