In his Jan. 13 Commentary piece (“Trump makes Iran more dangerous”), U.S. Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I., stated that “this is the first time Iran and the United States have in engaged in open military conflict since the 1979 revolution.”

This is incorrect. In April 1988, the U.S. Navy conducted “Operation Praying Mantis” in response to the indiscriminate mining conducted by Iran in the Northern Arabian Gulf and the subsequent damage these mines inflicted on the Samuel B. Roberts and other shipping assets. During this short but violent exchange, nearly half of the operational Iranian navy was sunk or disabled, as well as two Iranian oil platforms used for reconnaissance.

With one phone call by the congressman’s staff to the Naval War College, a more historically accurate article could have been presented to his constituents. That is, of course, if the tumultuous relationship the United States has had with Iran was indeed the point of the article.
