The demonstrably groundless accusations put forth and stubbornly defended by state Rep. Marcia Ranglin-Vassell ("Twitter spat leads to charge of racism," news, Jan. 8) are a textbook example of identity politics and detrimental to the cause of racial harmony. This reprehensible attitude is the more troubling coming from one whose job it is to influence young and pliable minds. Further, her blaming of outside factors such as poverty for those dismal test scores is readily disproved and amounts to a defense of the status quo, an untenable position to say the least.
Perhaps there are more enlightened teachers with less baggage who will weigh in with constructive suggestions. We need teachers who truly have the kids' best interests guiding their agendas to counter Ms. Ranglin-Vassell's vitriolic posture of victimhood.
