President George H.W. Bush made a commitment to service in his "Thousand Points of Light" campaign, highlighting his belief that America's volunteer organizations are to be "spread like stars throughout the nation, doing good."

He hailed the virtues of community and volunteerism. President Bush presented a daily Point of Light Award. Thousands of Americans were honored. His Points of Light Foundation has empowered the spirit of service to one another in America.

Today, it is the world's largest organization dedicated to volunteer service, with 5 million people volunteering 20 million hours of service annually.

I am one of those people. I am a Democrat who was inspired.

And now, here is the current Republican president, Donald Trump, voicing his opinion:

"The thousand points of light, what the hell was that, by the way? Thousand points of light, what did that mean, does anyone know? I know one thing, Make America Great Again we understand. Putting America first, we understand. Thousand points of light, I never quite got that one."

I suspect that a man like Donald Trump cannot contemplate doing anything without being on the take for personal gain. The concept of helping others in times of need for free is for "losers."

And 90 percent of Republicans approve of this man. They, unfortunately, are the true losers.
