I do not consider myself an alarmist or one given to hyperbole but I do believe that President Donald Trump presents an existential threat to our nation as it was envisioned. While this threat cannot compare to the threat of actual dissolution of our nation in the mid-19th century, the threat to the nation envisioned by the Founders is very real.

It appears that much of the voting public has embraced Mr. Trump's political vision, including his views on executive power, the Bill of Rights, and the critical separation of powers. We are indeed facing an existential threat.

If, as a nation, we fail to reject not only the president's individual policies but also his toxic, often incoherent histrionics, which serve to undermine the very fabric of our democracy, we will indeed no longer be able to lay claim to the vision and dreams of our Founding Fathers.
