As a visitor from Washington, D.C., I recently had the distinct pleasure of attending the extraordinary Kingston Chamber Music Festival. I must, however, admit to being appalled by the condition of the University of Rhode Island’s Fine Arts Center.

Aside from the questionable decision to use a Brutalist design for a structure that houses beauty, it seems that no one has been held accountable for the upkeep of the exterior, which is covered with large areas of crumbling concrete. Even the sign for art galleries is faded beyond recognition.

As an admirer of the charming State of Rhode Island, I am disappointed that it places so little value on its public arts buildings.
