Rhode Island House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello has repeatedly disregarded my requests to change the language of the property tax relief credit. Currently, the law only gives people who receive Social Security disability benefits the opportunity to take this credit, thereby excluding disabled veterans, who instead receive benefits from the Veterans Benefits Administration.

Since 2014, there have been four bills to address this exclusion, but they keep dying in the House Finance Committee.

I have tried to reach out to Mattiello and his office to discuss this, but the speaker and his staff have ignored my calls and emails, showing they are not interested in hearing from constituents who do not share his opinions.

What makes this even more frustrating is that this law actually discriminates against veterans, because it excludes them from applying while another class of people can.

But Mattiello is not alone — the rest of the General Assembly is also allowing this discrimination to continue. I am sure if their grandfathers were among the group of excluded veterans, this law would have been changed a long time ago.
