A bus driver who worked for the Martha’s Vineyard Transit Authority has been fired after allegedly making a racist remark at a potential passenger, the company said in a statement.
The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon when a Route 13 VTA bus traveling from Edgartown to Oak Bluffs passed a person trying to flag down the bus on Beach Road.
That potential passenger took an Uber to Oak Bluffs, arriving before the bus, and asked the driver why he didn’t pick him up, according to the statement.
Audio and video on board the bus determined the driver first told the passenger that the bus was full but when the passenger continued to question him, the driver stated, “well, it’s because you are black,” the statement said.
“The VTA and their operating company, Transit Connection Inc., who manage the vehicle operations, have a zero tolerance policy for this type of behavior,” the company said in the statement.
