NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass. -- A 16-year-old Providence boy drowned at a North Attleboro pond Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

Jonathan Lozada was at Whiting's Pond with about a dozen friends and family when he went into the water with a friend, according to the Bristol County district attorney's office. Within minutes, Lozada was seen flailing his arms before going underwater, the DA's office said. The friend and another 11-year-old tried to reach him, but Lozada went into deeper water quickly.

The friend and the young boy raced to the beach and called for help, prompting a search effort by a number of swimmers. Lozada's body was found by Norton Fire Department divers at about 7 p.m., 20 feet from shore in 40 feet of water, the DA's office said. Lozada was pronounced dead at the scene.

No foul play is suspected.
